Lobbyists are asking the Minnesota Legislature to introduce a bill establishing a state angleworm hatchery at a cost of $30,000. Supporters are divided on the potential location of such a plant.

Duluth Central High School junior Lawrence Hadselford, 17, came in third in the first race of the St. Paul Winter Carnival dog sled derby, a 22-mile race from Hastings to the St. Paul courthouse. George Esslinger, 40, of Lake Kabetogama, came in first, while 17-year-old Laurel Armstrong, of Anoka, took second.

Mayor Robert Beaudin alerted Duluth city councilors they will be asked to approve a $1.5 million bond debt to begin construction on a water filtration plant to absorb asbestiform particles left in Lake Superior water by the Reserve taconite plant in Silver Bay.

Minneapolis-based developer Sherman Associates is proposing a 145-room first-class hotel, likely a Sheraton franchise, with 30 upper-level condominiums at Third Avenue East and Superior Street. The building would contain amenities such as a restaurant, pool and fitness center.
