Bygones: Duluth's first phone directory fit on single card

If the pages of the 25,000 copies of Duluth's new telephone directory were placed end to end and side by side, they would form a wall 14 feet high around the entire city. Duluth's first directory was printed in 1888 on a 3-by-6 card and contained 30 numbers.

Duluthians Shirley Plaisted and Joanne Washburn were mistaken for extras in the Meryl Streep movie "Falling in Love" while exiting Tiffany's on Fifth Avenue on a recent vacation to New York. The director told them they should get behind Streep on the sidewalk, so they did. The pair can be seen a few minutes before the end of the film.
