Duluth hospitals share most popular baby names of 2024

DULUTH — Oh, baby! Local birthing centers were busy welcoming new lives during the past year.

Here’s a look at how many children were born at Duluth’s hospitals, and the most popular names chosen for boys and girls in 2024.

There were 625 births at Aspirus St. Luke’s in Duluth between Dec. 1, 2023, and Nov. 20.

The most popular names for boys born at Aspirus St. Luke’s during that time were:

1. Henry (9)
2. Oliver (6)
3. Jackson or Jaxon (5)
4. August or Augustus, Henrik, Louis or Lewis, and Theodore (5)
5. Emmett, Ezra, Finely, Forest or Forrest, Hayden, Leo, Liam, Maverick and Wesley (3)

For girls born at Aspirus St. Luke’s, the top names for that timeframe were:

1. Lily, Lillian, Liliana or Lillianna (7)
2. Eleanor, Violet or Violette (5)
3. Eliana, Eloise and Evelyn (4)
4. Abby or Abigail, Ada, Bailey, Ivy, Madeline or Madeline, Maisie or Mazie, Nora or Noora, Quin and Sophia (3)

Unique baby names at Aspirus St. Luke’s over the past year were Calliope, Kirby, Marigold, Bjorn, Damarjay, Denzel, Gus, Ollivander and Vincenzo.

“The names reflect not only a love for classic and meaningful names, but also the diversity and creativity of families throughout our region,” states a news release from Aspirus St. Luke’s.

Of the seven other Aspirus Health hospitals that deliver babies in Wisconsin and Michigan, a total of 2,911 births — 1,427 girls and 1,484 boys — were reported in 2024.

Nearly eight babies were born per day at Essentia Health’s Minnesota hospitals in 2024.

Entering the final week of the year, 2,780 babies had entered the world at Essentia’s five hospitals in Minnesota that perform deliveries:

• 1,673 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth. 
• 476 at Essentia Health St. Mary’s-Detroit Lakes. 
• 390 at Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd. 
• 165 at Essentia Health-Virginia.
• 76 at Essentia Health-Moose Lake.
