ST. CLOUD — Nat Wagner's tenure as Minnesota Duluth softball coach started with two victories on Saturday as the Bulldogs took down Southwest Minnesota State 7-0 and St. Cloud State 10-3 at the Husky Dome in St. Cloud.

Against SMSU, UMD pitchers Allison Luoma (Northwestern) and Allyssa Williams combined on a three-hit shutout. Each had three strikeouts.

UMD's Morgan McMillan started her season with a 3-for-4 game and scored twice, while Nicole Schmitt had a double, a homer and drove in four runs.

Schmitt and Lauren Jenkins had matching two-run doubles to start the SCSU game and Jenkins added a two-run homer in the fourth. That was enough cushion for Maddy Walsh (Proctor), who allowed three runs on seven hits in four innings and earned the pitching win. She struck out three and walked one.

Schmitt had another homer for a second consecutive four-RBI game.

UMD (2-0) will meet SMSU again and Bemidji State on Sunday in St. Cloud.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
