SUPERIOR — As he closes in on the elusive 1,000-point milestone for his career, Superior junior Calvin Anderson is keeping his focus on what matters most to him as one of the team’s leaders: winning.
The 6-foot-6 wing player did his part on Thursday after scoring a game-high 22 points against Duluth Denfeld, but it was not enough to take down the Hunters in a back-and-forth 68-62 battle at Superior High School.

The result was a source of disappointment for Anderson, who will look to reach the career benchmark on the road in the Spartans’ next two games.
“It kind of sucked to not get it tonight, but overall I just wanted to win more than anything and couldn’t get that either, so it was a rough night.”
Better days are undoubtedly ahead for the versatile three-level scorer, who has taken a big step from his sophomore year in which he averaged 17 points per game and seven rebounds.
“He’s finishing drastically better,” said Superior head coach Kory Deadrick. I mean around the rim I think his pump fake ability he’s getting guys up in the air, he’s getting and-ones. Maybe not as much tonight, but in the last four, five games it’s been really fun to watch him finish around the rim, probably at about 80%.”
As a defender, Anderson has continually risen to the challenge regardless of where he’s asked to play.
“He’s played everywhere,” said Deadrick. “We play mostly zone, but sometimes he’s at the top because his length presents some issues, but tonight he’s playing down low a little bit more defensively because they had some size and they were trying to go inside…”

“I like the path that he’s on trajectory-wise,” Deadrick continued. “Year over year he’s continued to improve his game, and has continued to get stronger.”

It’s no wonder that Anderson has continued to draw interest from collegiate programs in recent months, namely at the Division II level. In December, Anderson took to social media to announce that he received an offer from Minnesota Duluth. Anderson received a second offer earlier this month from Michigan Tech.
“It was really nice,” said Anderson of the recruitment. “I mean it’s been a goal of mine since I was little and picking up that initial offer really is just a weight off my shoulders and getting another one from Michigan Tech it just feels good. I’ve worked so hard for it I just gotta keep working because I want to keep pushing myself to the next level.”
