ALPINE SKIING

East girls win section crown

Elisabeth Bergan dominated the second of two runs as she and Duluth East won Section 7 girls Alpine skiing championships on Tuesday at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.

Bergan was second after the first of two runs, then laid down a 42.48-second trip in the second run, more than a half-second better than Cloquet-Esko-Carlton’s Teagan Tessier, who finished second on the run and second overall with Bergan claiming a margin of more than two seconds.

The East girls finished with 359 points, 12 better than second-place Forest Lake.

The top two teams advance to the state meet back at Giants Ridge next Tuesday, Feb. 11, as do the 10 best individuals not on an already qualifying team. This meant Teagan Tessier and Nadia Tessier qualified easily as individuals for CEC, which was sixth in the team standings.

By that standard, Duluth Marshall will also send two skiers to state: Sophia Weyrauch and Silvie Lane, who were 11th and 12th overall. Stella Maris’s Annabel Hanson led after the first run, but fought back through an error to take 17th overall and the final transfer position.

On the boys side, Cook County and Forest Lake were the team qualifiers.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
