The Spuds (21-1) haven’t lost since their Nov. 22 opener to Wayzata, but Hermantown worked around a decided shot disadvantage to grab an equalizer in the second period, with Charlie Marchand bagging a power play goal for a 1-1 game 9:29 into the middle frame.

That lasted about halfway into the third before Steffen struck at the 7:15 mark. Hermantown, which generated only seven shots on goal in the third period and 19 for the game, couldn’t respond to avoid back-to-back losses.

The Moorhead win was only their fourth one-goal game on the 21-game win streak and first in nearly four weeks.

The Hawks, who probably would have given up No. 1 in Class A to Cloquet-Esko-Carlton anyway after the Lumberjacks’ win on Thursday night , got 24 saves from Bryce Francisco.

Proctor 10, Ely 0

The Rails went north and ran riot on Friday night in Ely, outshooting the host Timberwolves 48-8.

Tanner Ross piled up the stats, scoring twice and assisting on six Proctor goals for an eight-point night. He had a hand in each of the Rails’ first seven goals, scoring two. Austin Bryant finished with a hat trick and two helpers.

Ross’s bushel of ‘apples’ is, surprisingly only good for sharing a school record as Dom Talerico had six assists in a game for Proctor in 1997. The state record is seven, held by three players.

However, Preston Deragisch of Sartell equalized with 3:43 remaining and Jacobs scored an unassisted game-winner that knocked Denfeld back below .500 again at 9-10 overall.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
