Pineapple on pizza is one of the most debatable food combinations ever. What's your opinion?
Pineapple on pizza is one of the most popular debates of the 21st Century. Commonly referred to as “Hawaiian pizza,” with pineapple and ham, it likely didn’t originate in Hawaii at all. Believe it or not, pineapple on pizza is believed to have originated in Canada.

The modern pizza that we know and love today evolved from dishes created in Naples, Italy in the 18th and 19th centuries. Italians are stereotypically known for taking their pizza very seriously.
Early references to pineapple on pizza dates back to the mid-1950s, with “Hawaiian” being used to describe pizza topped with pineapple and other combinations of ingredients later on in the decade.
However, according to the BBC , the pizza’s major success is often credited as having been created in Canada by a Greek immigrant named Sam Panopoulos in 1962. Panopoulos and his brothers owned a restaurant in Ontario, and they decided to create a pizza with ham and pineapple, not knowing how it would turn out. The brothers soon learned that the pizza was a hit with the customers.
But why call the pizza “Hawaiian?” The brand of tinned pineapple that Panopoulos used was called Hawaiian, so he simply named the hit pizza after it.
Quickly after the introduction of this new style of pizza, its popularity grew throughout North America. However, it has remained controversial from the start. Some people enjoy the mixture of sweet and savory, and some people think the tomato sauce clashes with the pineapples. What do you think?
