Reader's View: Tell your representatives what matters to you

We can tell our representatives now what matters to us. Like increasing the child tax credit, as both parties promised in the last election and which promises to cut child poverty in half.

The Jan. 13 letter, “ Sticking together, we can resist a dictatorship ,” made two good points: stick together and communicate with those who represent us.

But we don’t have to wait to give feedback. We can tell our representatives now what matters to us. Like increasing the child tax credit, as both parties promised in the last election and which promises to cut child poverty in half. Like expanding SNAP, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program , in the next farm bill to end the struggle with hunger that plagues 40 million and more every day. Or like creating more affordable housing and in the meantime passing a renter tax credit to keep those struggling with poverty safe from homelessness.

Then let’s follow up with our members of Congress, thank them for doing the right things, remind them to do what makes a difference for the majority of Americans, and stay in contact with them so they know it matters. If we work together, we can make America a land of hope and possibility for all.
