Overheard at Amsoil: Should Zam Plante return to center?

Bulldogs coach Scott Sandelin spoke Wednesday at Amsoil Arena ahead of UMD’s series this weekend against Stonehill at Amsoil Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. Friday and 6:07 p.m. Saturday.

I wasn’t at Amsoil Arena on Wednesday. I was at visiting with some very smart people in Rochester.

UMD posts its press conferences with local media every week. You can watch the whole thing here, along with a Q&A with junior defenseman Joey Pierce.
Here are my highlights from Sandelin on Wednesday:

While everyone would like the Bulldogs to take giant leaps from game to game, they’re taking baby steps at the moment.

“Unfortunately we’ve learned through not winning — losing," Sandelin said. "I’ve got a strong belief in this group. We’re getting better. I guess I got to be a little more patient.”

KDAL’s Bruce Ciskie asked a great question about shuffling the lines. How do you know when to break up a line that isn’t working versus giving a line time to gel?

“There’s been some guys that have been given opportunities that haven’t performed to the level we thought, so that means some other guys are going to get a chance," Sandelin said. "Do I think Zam (Plante) should be in the middle of the rink? Yes, but for now he’s not.”

Senior defenseman Will Francis missed practice last week and the series with the Gophers due to an illness, but he’s back skating with the team this week.

Sandelin was asked about the play of goaltender Adam Gajan against Minnesota and had this to say:

“Beside from two or three goals, I thought he played great," Sandelin said. "He didn’t get much help. I don’t care if you’re Patrick Roy or Marty Brodeur, you got to have some help.”

I enjoyed this exchange between Alexis Bass of Northland News Now/My9 Sports and Sandelin:

Bass: Do you feel like some of the struggles with some of the players is a mental block?

Sandelin: You’d have to ask them. Probably. I don’t know. I’m not going to get into answering that. If you think you know of a few players that aren’t playing good, you ask them that question. You do it for me.
