Motorist charged in Detroit Lakes pedestrian death was allegedly using TikTok

The driver admitted that she had been viewing a TikTok video when the accident took place on Sept. 3, 2024, according to the criminal complaint.

DETROIT LAKES — Mariska Kay Nunn, 20, of rural Detroit Lakes, has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony criminal vehicular homicide.

According to court records, Nunn was the driver of a Ford Focus that fatally struck a man at approximately 12:15 p.m. on Sept. 3, 2024.

The man, Dean Chadbourne, 81, of Detroit Lakes, was a pedestrian on the 1500 block of Randolph Road in Detroit Lakes.

Nunn stated that she had been driving home on County Highway 25 from her boyfriend’s residence in Frazee. She said that she was traveling westbound on Randolph Road and did not see the man in the road. Nunn stated that her phone was on her lap when the accident happened, and she later admitted that she had been viewing a TikTok video when the accident happened, according to the criminal complaint.

Chadbourne was transported by ambulance to the Detroit Lakes-Becker County Airport, where he died of his injuries about 45 minutes after being struck.

An extraction report was conducted on Nunn’s cellphone. The results showed that TikTok videos had been viewed on Sept. 3, 2024, at 12:08:40, 12:10:50, 12:12:40, 12:12:52 and finally at 12:14:05. The 911 call from Nunn to report the accident occurred at 12:15.

Her first appearance is set for Feb. 20 before District Court Judge Michael D. Fritz
