Duluth man found dead after falling through ice in Superior

SUPERIOR — A Duluth man has lost his life after falling through the ice on Woodstock Bay, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Gregory Garmer, 78, was found dead at approximately 4 p.m. Monday, reported the sheriff's office in a Facebook post.

A search had been underway since Sunday evening, when Garmer failed to return home after leaving around 1 p.m. with the intention to ice skate on the bay.

Deputies were dispatched to the area, and members of the public were asked to review any potentially relevant camera footage.

Assistance was rendered by the St. Louis County Rescue Squad, the Superior Fire Department, the Superior Police Department, and the Minnesota State Patrol, with the latter agency sending a helicopter.

Woodstock Bay has recently seen renewed attention after the September completion of a $1.6 million waterfront park.
