District 8 - Duluth area
CO Derek Peterlin (Brookston) prepared equipment for an upcoming snowmobile training. He continued to receive complaints of snowmobiles failing to utilize the designated trail route as they travel through the city of Floodwood. Snowmobile activity is picking up throughout the station. Enforcement action was taken for various snowmobile and ATV violations.
CO Andy Schmidt (Duluth West) monitored angling activity, worked fur registration, handled ATV-related complaints and attended the annual United Northern Sportsmen fishing contest. Snowmobile activity picked up a little this week, but trails are thin.

CO Kipp Duncan (Duluth East) checked some snowmobile activity. Riders are happy to be riding the trails, but more snow is needed. Fishing activity continues. Inland trout lakes are now open.
CO Tony Elwell (Cloquet) concentrated on angling activity. He also checked snowmobile trails. Most trails have had an initial groomer pass to knock down grass and firm up the base. However, conditions will be poor in most areas until new snow arrives.
CO Mikeena Wehr (Carlton) continued working a small-game and big-game case and attended furbearer registration. Snowmobiles have been seen venturing out on trails, though trail conditions vary throughout the area.
CO Aimee Hand (Willow River) checked ice anglers and completed equipment maintenance. There were a few people out in the area riding snowmobiles and some recreationally riding ATVs.
CO Ben Karon (Pine City) completed background investigations for the upcoming Conservation Officer Academy. Fur registration was attended and first-time trappers were happy to report some success. He also checked on state forests, anglers and snowmobilers.
CO Sara Mooers (District 8) attended the Duluth-area fur registration and the Northern Sportsmen Annual Fishing Contest. She continued to monitor angling activity. Anglers reported success landing sturgeon on the St. Louis River but slow walleye fishing in the Duluth Harbor. Additionally, several visitors have been in the area to observe and photograph the owl irruption. Birders reported encountering boreal owls, great gray owls and snowy owls along the North Shore.
