WINONA — Crunch time sided against Minnesota Duluth and in favor of Winona State on Wednesday, as the Warriors pulled out a 57-53 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory.

Lexi Karge's driving layup tied the game at 50 with 2:15 to play, but a turnover and a miss on UMD's next two possessions gave WSU an opening to edge in front at the free-throw line. The Warriors made seven consecutive free throws to close it out.

The Bulldogs were hampered by 17 turnovers, reinforcing a turnover margin that is currently second-worst in the 15-team NSIC. That muted the Bulldogs' advantage in field-goal percentage, as they were 21-for-51 (41.2%) from the floor and held WSU to 20-for-63 (31.7%).

Maria Counts led the Bulldogs with 15 points, while Karge and Johanna Miller scored 11 apiece.

UMD falls to 7-13 (5-10 NSIC) but plays four of its next five at home, starting with a Saturday visit from Concordia-St. Paul.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
