TWO HARBORS — A relocated, larger municipal liquor store, Breakwall Bottle Shoppe, opened Monday.

Its new building, located near Culver’s at 1080 Highway 61, features a circular lot with ample parking designed to better accommodate campers, boats and delivery trucks.

Open seven days a week, Breakwall Bottle Shoppe carries a variety of off-sale liquors, wines, beer and mixes. Ice and tobacco products are also available. Wine tastings will be held in the store's northwest corner.

The original opening date of Jan. 1 was postponed due to a delayed delivery of the store’s point-of-sale system.

Construction of the new site began in May to relocate the city-owned liquor store from its former location at 630 Seventh Ave. W. to reduce traffic congestion in the commercial corridor.

Tree removal took place outside the long-eared bat mating season, and the parking lot lighting is designed to minimize light pollution.

The city hired Duluth-based DSGW Designs for the project’s architecture and interior design. The 10,500-square-foot building has an industrial appearance inspired by the iron docks.

In 2022, the liquor store generated over $2 million for a net profit of $254,344, ranking it 45th out of 176 in the state for gross sales, according to the most recent data from the Office of the State Auditor.

The North Shore cities of Beaver Bay, Silver Bay and Grand Marais also have municipal liquor stores.
